Lobsters and Learning
July 2009
Rob Caron, President of Caron Engineering, Inc.(CEI), and Ryan Hegman, Sales Manager at Hegman Machine Tool, Inc.(HMT), developed a unique seminar together for the benefit of Hegman’s customers.
The concept stemmed from the idea that Caron Engineering’s technology would be an advantage to many of Hegman’s customers. The seminar was consisted of a morning and afternoon session with a special twist: an old fashioned Maine Lobster Boil for lunch.
In the morning session, details of CEI’s TMAC and AutoComp software solutions were presented. The PowerPoint slide shows described the technology behind the products and how end users could experience some real cost savings.
More importantly, however, was the presentation to these great Midwesterners on how to eat a lobster like a real Mainer. We’d like to say that no live lobsters were harmed in the making of the lobster-training presentation, but we really can’t.
Once everyone had their fill of seafood, the afternoon session continued. It involved a part-cutting demonstration with the Okuma Multus 200. Highlights included showing the sensitivity of TMAC during tapping and drilling as the feed rate was increased, causing excessive horsepower. Customers were impressed with the speed with which TMAC could force a tool retraction from the material being cut. Further demonstration involved input to AutoComp from a caliper. Several dimensions were measured on the part and Rob demonstrated how AutoComp can automatically select the correct dimension by range.
By the end of the day, Hegman’s customers that attended the session saw how they could apply this technology with immediate benefits at their own shops.
